Great definition for the year 1983. Let's keep this in mind when designing AI in the 2020's.

1.1 A DEFINITION
What exactly is artificial intelligence? Although most attempts to define complex and widely used terms precisely are exercises in futility, it is useful to draw at least an approximate boundary around the concept to provide a perspective on the discussion that will follow. To do this, I propose the following by no means universally accepted definition. Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is the study of how to make computers do things at which, at the moment, people are better.
