Posting about #Liechtenstein 🇱🇮, as I live in that tiny Principality. Ex-🇧🇪
I am not a political expert, but I believe a referendum would take place. Since things are going well in the country, and our big brother 🇨🇭, it seems unlikely that the population would vote in favor of joining the EU. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, in July BH referred to the possibility of joining the EU. At present, we are part of the EEA and maintain a strong cooperation agreement with Switzerland. However, it remains uncertain whether Liechtenstein would accept EU membership. (Unlikely I believe)

The municipal boundaries reflect medieval land ownership patterns, where rights were distributed among various feudal lords.
Municipalities often own detached mountain areas for traditional seasonal grazing. With only 11 municipalities in a tiny country, there has been little incentive to simplify.🤷‍♂️

Given Liechtenstein’s strong ties with both Switzerland and the EU, the most likely outcome would be either a bilateral agreement with the EU or a deeper integration into Switzerland’s new EU arrangements. Full EU membership is less likely due to the direct democratic system here in 🇱🇮 (and 🇨🇭)

It's not unique. As you mentioned. Those smallest entities have something unique. It's not ideal. We will see.

Liechtenstein is a uniquely structured country. It is one of the few remaining monarchies where the sovereign holds veto power over legislation. Additionally, church and state are constitutionally intertwined, making it one of the rare European nations with an official state religion.

Some argue that taxpayer money should not fund media when there are other pressing needs (e.g., healthcare, infrastructure).
In Liechtenstein, Radio Liechtenstein received over 70% of state media funding, leaving little for private media.

A referendum, with 55.4% of voters in favour, decided to end state funding for Radio Liechtenstein by the end of 2025. As the country's only local radio station, it may be forced to cease broadcasting by the end of this year unless a private investor steps in.

One significant issue is media funding.
Another area of concern is the country's financial autonomy and stability.
Additionally, debates over national identity and immigration have been prominent.

The loss of a seat for Freie Liste is disappointing, but not entirely surprising given the general political trend. The rise of Demokraten pro Liechtenstein suggests a shift towards populist sentiments, possibly fueled by frustration with traditional parties.

Léon was a joyful dog, despite losing sight in one eye due to veterinary malpractice.

I hope all went well. Ours also had an eye infection but the vet took the wrong medicine. 😞
