KZCF staff recently attended El Concilio’s Nuestras Raíces Gala, where the six members of Ballet Folklórico de Mi Tierra received the Latinx Youth Leader Award in recognition of their leadership, community involvement and the countless hours they have dedicated to the program.

As we celebrate 100 years of impact in Kalamazoo County, we are looking back at pivotal moments in our history. Today, we're going back to 1941 when KZCF instituted its first motto, "Future Incorporated." 84 years later, KZCF remains committed to a future where everyone in our community can thrive!

Dano is the co-host of WMUK 102.1 FM (Alma Latina), founder of the Adelante Dano podcast, state organizer for United Farmworkers Foundation, and co-chair of the Southwestern Michigan Migrant Resource Council.

As a teenager, Dano worked at a local restaurant on weekends, washing dishes and serving as a prep cook. He went on to attend Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Western Michigan University.

At the age of nine, Dano settled in Kalamazoo, where he began attending Woodward Elementary School. Despite moving to Kalamazoo and beginning school, he still travelled during the summers to Van Buren County to harvest fruits and vegetables.

Daniel “Dano” Oropeza was born in Pharr, Texas, and raised by a single parent. At the age of seven, Dano started working in migrant camps in Florida and Michigan, harvesting fruits and vegetables in the summer.
