He spun many stories in his youth, not all of them true, but the truth mattered less than the flash of coins and the believing eyes in his audience. The part of us that is me lies in bed beside the king, and feels the little deaths of his cells, each of them a small but terrible thrill. Hilla crash-landed on an asteroid on the second lap of her first solar run. All Beekeepers know that when something important takes place you should tell the bees. First, I want you to imagine my hands all over your new body—piercing through your skin; reaching for your face. Jak woke in the transfer pod, and finding himself alone, cracked open the lid, slid to his feet, slipped off his robe, and stood naked in the center of the full-length mirrors which lined the small room. Stop! The silent servants come and go. When discussions arise of the great collections, as they do at the dinners I must attend, I lose my appetite. I don’t mean to sound disloyal, because I love my grandmother. I hear him before I lay eyes on him, champagne sparkling on my tongue as the band strikes up to play some tired tune that will serve as the backdrop to this overwrought affair. Listen.

Fifty years I have worn this form, and no longer is it a strangeness to me, this bipedal mass of pseudomeat and pseudoblood. Falseness upon falseness, I thought when first it was woven, and I was set apart from us, but it no longer seems so. It is just me.

Dear Dr. Bernofsky, I recently became unstuck in time. (Long story. Let’s just say flux capacitors and tequila shots don’t mix.) I was stumbling through the harsh, dense jungles of the late Cretaceous period when I was cornered by a pack of hungry velociraptors. My question is: what’s the proper etiquette in this situation? Obviously I don’t want to be eaten alive a million years before the dawn of written history, but I also don’t want to seem stuck-up and snobbish about it. Any thoughts? Sincerely, T. Logan, Esq. Dear Dino-chow, I certainly understand your trepidation, if not the liquor-fueled quantum mechanics that landed you in this strange predicament in the first place. (I’m more a gin and time-tunnel tonic man myself.) As you say, one doesn’t want to be snacked upon by giant prehistoric lizards. But, when in the place that hundreds of thousands of years in the future will become Rome… I can suggest only that you use your best judgment and not rush to any hasty conclusions. How do you know, for instance, that these velociraptors aren’t vegan? Have you even asked? Isn’t that really the snobbish way to act?
