Interested in the languages, history and general fuckery of the former Habsburg Empire. Not an academic. Both the pfp and the banner image are from Oberst Redl by István Szabó.
Ethnic breakdown of the population of Austria-Hungary in 1869:
Germans: 25.4%
Slavs: 45.6%
Romance groups [Romanians, Italians etc.]: 9.5%
Hungarians: 15.4%
smaller ethnicities: 4.1% (Jews; 3.8%)

Apparently a catalog of one thousand miniature nudes would only cost you K2.20 in 1909 Vienna (which I think is like 10-15 bucks in 2023 dollars), if I'm understanding this correctly (am I?) Seems like a pretty sweet deal!

there is something really magical about turn-of-the-century newspaper adverts. just real mad scientist solutions to the world's unlikeliest problems

for example:

Do you hate your flat feet? Why not try Dr. Högyes' ASBESTOS INSOLES?

An inflammatory pamphlet insulting the soldiers started making the rounds. At the same time, the soldiers were issued 6 cigars and plenty of brandy each, and they stomped around Milan feeling some type of way, puffing smoke in people's faces.

When the people of Milan decided to collectively give up smoking for New Year's in 1848, the campaign led to 5 deaths, left dozens more wounded and, in a way, contributed to the unification of Italy.

First preliminary session of the Imperial Diet in Vienna on 10 July 1848, by Franz Kollarz (Kolář), Wien Museum (sammlung.wienmuseum.at/en/object/26...).

The session was a bit of a letdown because only 186 of the 383 deputies showed up, so the quorum wasn't reached (for very k.k. reasons):

No disrespect to the doubtlessly hardworking Viennese hairdresser from 1891 behind this look but I would be absolutely livid if he made my hair cone-shaped

Super intrigued about why this 1908 Rüger advert is in Esperanto but I am afraid to ask because asking Esperantists about Esperanto is like asking a Jehova's Witness about Jesus
