This is the phase difference between the two superconductors.

The phase acts like a particle moving in a “washboard” potential.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics goes to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis —

“for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.”

Here's what I understand of their work ⚛️🧪🧵

String theory deals with strings. These strings can be closed or open.

In 1986, Kawai, Lewellen & Tye noticed that any closed‑string "scattering amplitude"* can be written as a product of two open‑string amplitudes.

This is now known as the KLT relations.

A thread on how gauge/gravity duality tells us to take string theory very seriously. ⚛️🧵

No its not the usual holographic universe argument.

Let us start with a quick intro to the duality from that noted string diehard, Sabine Hossenfelder

Sabine Hossenfelder dropped this gem today, in response to my post on X. The context here is Weinstein's GU having anomalies.

That second sentence is incredible.

A classical theory develops issues when you try to quantize it? Well have you considered that quantum theory is not fundamental?

Thanks vro. For many years, India has been losing top scientific talent to US. Looks like the policies of the current US admin will finally put an end to that by kneecapping US universities. Amazing.

#OTD Indian physicist C. V. Vishveshwara(1938-2017) was born. Vishveshwara made many important contributions to general relativity.

His seminal contribution was the discovery of quasi-normal modes in black holes.⚛️

This is the famous black hole information loss paradox, one of the biggest open problems in physics.

There are several proposed solutions. Samir Mathur of Ohio State University has a proposal that may be the most radical.

Mathur says that there are no black holes to begin with!

Black Holes or Fuzzballs?
⚛️🧪
Some physicists believe that there are no black holes! The things that look like black holes are complex hyperdimensional objects called "fuzzballs."

Wait what? Read on!
