It could have so easily been a movie solely about evil white vampires specifically targeting a vulnerable black community but the themes of oppression and sense of othering felt by ALL minorities is so much more deep and compelling.

In that he is attempting to create a unified culture defined by their oppressed status. He sees Sammy's blues music as complimentary to the Irish music of his home expressing discontent and loss at the hands of colonization.

He has seen the devastation and loss that comes with being an oppressed minority: losing your language, your culture, your religion to the eurocentric ideal majority.
