Earth will warm 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels in just two years, new data shows. Irreversible tipping points — like the melting of Arctic ice sheets or the collapse of coral reefs — are closer at hand than previously believed.
Earth is likely to cross a key climate threshold in two years
A new World Meteorological Organization report spells the end of the world’s most famous climate goal.

Great interview on proposed Medicaid/ACA subsidy cuts from Tradeoffs podcast…

Personal fave quote 😅: "Look, if someone is overweight, you can lower their weight by cutting off their arm. That doesn’t really address the problem you’re trying to solve..."

“It’s the first new pharmaceutical approach to treating pain in more than 20 years… But the medication’s modest effectiveness and lengthy development process underscore the challenges of finding new ways to manage pain.”

The fact that our first instinct as humans is to try and prove someone else “lesser than” is something that should give us more pause.

If someone is being irresponsible, we *have* to debunk— but the fact that humans genuinely get *pleasure* out of eviscerating each other online gives me the ick.
Debunking can be a fun way to find an audience in science communication, but I think it can be over-relied on.

We should be celebrating more than we are defending, not just because it’s less miserable, but also because it’s good marketing!

This is so important. Expertise and education are not enough to change behaviors/attitudes. If we pontificate & do not attempt to hear someone out, it is the fastest way to have someone dig their heels in further to inaccurate beliefs. Change requires a relationship, not just communication of fact.
we always say all public health is local and I think that’s true. the lesson from Jane MacAlevey (RIP) is to go first to the “biggest worst.” If we are gonna build public health up at the ground level we’re gonna have to talk to MAHAs and the MAHA-sympathetic at the local level

Currently reading for January. I’ve noticed that I’ve had to take multiple breaks when reading this one because it’s actually been affecting me emotionally.
