Treatment plan Ninja has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and chronic kidney disease. For hyperthyroidism, start oral therapy with methimazole at 2.5 mg twice daily. Consider starting a renal support diet like Hill's k/d or Royal Canin Renal Support to help manage kidney disease. Follow up - Ninja's lab work diagnosed two conditions, both of which can contribute to weigh loss. The first issue is hyperthyroidism. This is when the thyroid is overactive resulting in a higher than usual metabolism. Cats with this condition often lose weight inexplicably despite having a good appetite. We manage this condition with a medication called methimazole. This drug is given twice daily, long-term. We generally start all cats on 2.5 mg twice daily then adjust the dose as needed based on follow up test results. This can be caused by normal "wear and tear" on the kidneys over the years but also can be caused by infection, stones in the urinary tract, cancerous processes or strokes to the kidneys. There are follow up tests we could consider to screen for these other issues including abdominal ultrasound or a urine culture. Please let us know if you're interested in pursuing these tests. - Recommend technician appointment to check blood pressure as hypertension can result from both hyperthyroidism and renal disease - Recommend starting oral therapy for hyperthyroidism (methimazole 2.5 mg twice daily then recheck Senior Wellness profile 3-6 weeks after being on medication consistently) - Consider starting Hill's k/d or Royal Canin Renal Support to slow progression of renal disease If you have any questions or need further clarification on these recommendations, please reach out to our Virtual Care team.
