Yup rgba, I just get the distance from the source rgb to the palette rgb and use step() to turn it into a mix weight that's 0 or 1

Wow this is really cool, thanks for sharing it! Your second example on that page blew me away, I hadn't considered cycling through palettes for effects. I bet you could use that for a ton stuff!
