That's a good point. At least in my interpretation I don't consider the aspect of late diagnosis because I don't remember them having insight of how different they are, or at least they don't care. They are just doing their best with what they got. But it has been a bit since I read the books.

I think it's not so much about late diagnosis, as of finding a community where you can unmask and be a little open about yourself. At least for a time. But the act of masking is a really prominent theme in the books, and I believe it's because of it that the story resonates with autistic folks.
