On a personal note...in summer 2015 I was @fishguy.bsky.social 's NSF REU undergrad at Friday Harbor Labs. I presented that work at SICB & applied to PhDs...
In summer 2025 I'm an REU mentor w/ my own lab at @wsupullman.bsky.social.
What a trip this last 10 years has been. An NSF REU success story 🥳

Incredibly proud (& a bit late) that our paper, led by Mike Burns, is OUT NOW & OA!

We find a trade-off structures the primary axis of div. in reef fish feeding anatomy, & weak integration in the complex system allows div. away from that axis

Love, love, love Dynamic Ecology's long search for patterns in the opaque faculty job market
This time: Biden vote share is the dominant geo. pred. of # apps to EEB jobs
How does this cycle (blue politics ->$ for schools ->educated workers) shape us?

Alexus is now a postdoc at University of Bern continuing her on the role of innovations on producing diversity & working to increase equity in STEM!

For more about her, find her LinkedIn here: www.linkedin.com/in/alexus-RH/

Check out her interview this year with ASIH: doi.org/10.1643/t202...

Building on Alexus' past work, this result suggests that this functional novelty strengthens evolutionary integration of the prey capture apparatus.

This increase in integration allows repeated evolution into novel but constrained regions of shape & functional space, rather than spurring diversity

The innovation, "pharyngognathy", is a modification to the prey processing apparatus that enhances crushing but limits gape.
While the innov. permits ecological expansion into durophagy & herbivory, it has a negative assoc. with piscivory--an often gape-limited state--which may slow diversification

I am SO PROUD to say that the indomitable Alexus Roberts Hugghis (not yet on bsky)'s 3rd ch. is OUT NOW at Evolution Letters!

With me, @cmartinez.bsky.social , & Peter Wainwright, we find that a famous key innovation in feeding apparatus LIMITS functional diversification!

Bluesky has VIDEO now?!

Here's one of my favorite fish, Pomacanthus xanthometopon, eating a worm in the lab 😍

I am OVER THE MOON that our paper is out at Am Nat today!

We find phylogeny & biogeographic contingency shape functional diversity in cichlid radiations.

It's my first as co-first author, & Chris Martinez was an A+ co-lead. We had an amazing team-I am so proud of this work!

Hi Andrew! I'm a fish biologist wondering if you can add me to the zoology feed. I study macroevolution and biomechanics, and I'm a postdoc at Virginia Tech. Here's me on my last proper fieldwork, checking to make sure my cameras are on 😅🐟🐠

If you're at AGU today, check out the fabulous @dangrigarath.bsky.social 's presentation on soil biodiversity in California 🧪

He's presenting a report prepared by the California Department of Food & Agriculture Belowground Biodiversity Advisory Committee!

Did you know California state scientists are on the FIRST EVER STRIKE BY STATE EMPLOYEES this week?

They‘ve worked for 3 YEARS w/o a contract! If you’re in CA, call your reps! If you’re not, do your state scientists have a fair contract?

Learn about it: amp.sacbee.com/news/politic... #equalpayCA

Our final regional SICB talk of the day: Kelly Diamond on starting a research program at a PUI!!

Amazing advice—there are many kinds of jobs and universities where you can be happy. Find the one that is right for you.

A gorgeous plenary talk at Southeast Regional SICB by new VT engineering professor Justin Jaworski on mechanics of acoustically stealthy flight in owls! 🦉 A poroelastic edge helps reduce trailing edge noise, but owls are doing still more to limit sound—a continuing source of bioinspiration #evosky

If you couldn’t make it to SE rSICB today, make sure you catch @jackstack.bsky.social ‘s talk at SICB in Seattle! Extraordinary maxillary rotation in an early fish—with huge implications for the ecological and evolutionary history of fishes.

A few special things that have brightened this tough week--

Dr. Alexus Roberts Hugghis gave an incredible exit seminar on Tuesday celebrating her graduation from UC Davis 🥳;
and we had an unexpected visitor at the house yesterday 🐻

Hope you're all taking time right now to be with your loved ones

Absolutely incredible talk by @aaberhe.bsky.social today at Virginia Tech on building pathways in the DoE for equitable, inclusive research—incorporating the communities affected most by climate change into the research on solutions. So glad she came out to VT’s Global Change Center!
