Me, in a yellow No Kings Tshirt and my straw hat for sun protection. My hat has pins given to me from various protests. My homemade sign is white letters on black cardstock, in the best Star Wars font I could paint, "I am the Aunt(ifa) you're looking for." I also free hand drew the logo for the rebellion. Behind me are thousands of Nashville protestors getting ready to line the streets.

Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day to our void, Salem (such an original name - LOL).
Handsome, sleek, black cat with vivid yellow eyes and a back bell collar peeks out from some garden shrubs along a rock border. I haven't posted in a bit. America sadly continues it's fast track to fascism. Every day there is something that seems more and more un-American happening. The rise of ICE as a police force stealing people off the streets is alarming, the GOP protection of pediophiles and the Epstein files just disappeared, we're giving a war criminal Russian president red carpet treatment in Alaska, red states are sending national guard troops to Washington DC -- it all sounds like some crazy movie but it's happening. Good people continue to do what they can, the legal system is holding the line, mostly. California governor, Gavin Newsom, is directly engaging the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of the administration -- it's going to take a lot more. I try not to despair and to resist by finding and celebrating joy! The rescue kittens (almost a year old) are part of that joy!

The first dahlias of the season are already in bloom! This beauty got a head start because I missed pulling a tuber and it did fine over our mild winter. I believe the variety is Sam Hopkins.
Stunning deep red Dahlia bloom, wet from a light rain. The center is light green as petals continue to unfold. I started this post because I had deep thoughts about the state of our government. Oh, I remember now. Let's talk about what is happening with the disappearing of immigrants in the name of national security. 1) Do the work! Do the research, you will find the crimes committed by immigrants vs good 'ol white men is not even proportional. White men are exponentially more dangerous, especially for women. I empathize and feel deeply for the women whose names have become flash points because they were killed by immigrants, but it makes me sick that women killed by their husbands or boyfriends or lovers or stalkers who are white men don't get the same attention. It's kind of the same situation with the trans community - seriously focus on cleaning your own police department or church because it's FAR more likely the criminals are there, hiding in their white man privilege. 2) My mom and I were visited by the FBI post 9/11 because we had a uniform shop. We were given strict new guidance on ordering, storage, and selling of law enforcement uniforms and patches. We had a strict policy that you had to have a badge and ID before purchase. What the hell is up with the non-uniformed, non-identifable, covered face kidnappers??? Yes, I will call them kidnappers until they are clearly identified. Unreal. Why are we allowing this???

Roy's back leg/foot lazily hangs off the desk. This week has been exhausting, capped off by a long night of tornado watches and several thunderstorm warnings. We're fine here, some high winds have knocked over some things I need to pick up, but I can't stop thinking about Somerset, KY. I was watching Ryan Hall's YouTube stream and while he remained calm and professional, you could see the fear, frustration, and disbelief in his eyes that a Major tornado was not getting a National Weather Service tornado warning. The lack of staff at the NWS - an agency gutted by the Trump Administration is just plain stupid, dangerous, and cruel. Americans were killed due to the negligence of our government. It feels like a mirror to what is happening in our country - the ability to see what is happening is there, some of us are lucky enough to have access to the information, but others remain completely in the dark. My sister questioned a Veteran, who was collecting funds in front of the grocery store asking him who he voted for. He replied that it wasn't political - he was trying to help vets. She firmly educated him that yes, yes it is political and if he voted for Trump and the Republican he voted against his best interest. He either didn't know, received faulty information (fix news), or was willfully ignorant of the services being taken away and which party/legislators were responsible for this. These are scary and troubling times we are living in. People are being picked up off the streets by ICE. ICE and law enforcement are walking around with their faces covered, glasses, no true ID - no one knows who these guys are It's kidnapping. I remember after 9/11 having to inventory every patch in our uniform shop and check IDs before selling them - now anyone can get them online. We must demand accountability.

Mayday - An emergency signal, usually associated with aviation, spoken three times to indicate a serious emergency. All three feel especially urgent and necessary this year. What is happening? How do we have a government that is shipping people away to prisons on foreign soil, without due process? American citizens? A government that is collapsing the economy? A government that is making our lives more dangerous? The flowers and cats keep me grounded. They bring me joy. But they are a distraction from the real work we must do as citizens, as We the people.

This week has seen some push back by the courts/judicial, but more horrific and troubling activity. US citizen, American born children being taken out of the US and to "detention camps"? A judge arrested? Who the f#$& are these people who would carry out such orders? Who wakes up and thinks "today I'm going to act like a Nazi"? Scary and troubling, and here I am quietly writing about it in text no one reads? Where is my public courage and loud descent? I go to protests, but where is my courage to do more? The masses will become angry enough to loudly shout down the government and say "no more, not in my name" - of course too late for the years of atrocities committed or condoned by our country (Gaza and countless others), but only when the resources dry up, or some one they know, or a member of their family is abducted. Oh America, you could have been so much more. The sense of entitlement is overwhelming. How long will it take? This week the Pope died. I am not Catholic. My Italian grandmother was, and the ceremony around the church and Pope is fascinating, yet again another troubling history, but, I like to think this Pope, Francis, did act on his beliefs rather than buy into the politics and money of the Church? He seemed a decent man and I hope his replacement adds to a more just, kind, accepting church and world view than to the horrible men we are allowing power to now. I don't have enough space to write how I feel that the wrongs in the world right now are all caused by the fragile ego men who seek power and wealth over love.

Cookie is enjoying some outside time on this lovely #caturday. She is a wise old lady cat, who came to us many years ago as a "rescue". Turns out she was mostly feral. Over the years she has learned to enjoy her spoiled indoor life, but she still loves her outdoor visits.
Older grey cat walks through grass and mixed vegetation, including wild violets. She's in a fenced yard. The sun is bright! I've been thinking a lot about my Grandma this week. She was this spicy little Italian woman. She came to the United States as a young girl. She told us how hard it was in Brooklyn, being a foreigner. The other kids would call her names and spit on her. She said it made her want to learn English faster. She loved America - even after the ugliness she experienced as a child. Did it end when she was a child? No. I remember coming back from San Diego on the I-15, she joined our other grandparents on a day trip. I remember being at one of the check stations and her being profiled - her dark Mediterranean skin and jet black hair made the officers ask if she was a citizen. We all got questioned. It was scary as a young kid. I thought they were going to take my grandma. It was the 1980s. What the hell are we doing as a country, a society, as humans to be so freaking awful to each other? We've lost something. We've lost our soul. We've lost the vision of a "more perfect union". Why don't we embrace and value our differences? Those differences, woven together to create a beautiful and unique tapestry are what makes/made America the dream.
