Just start over from scratch

There’s wazuh. Advertises itself as a SIEM. I’ve tried it on and off but never extensively. You can self-host the server side, last I checked. It’s based on OpenSearch, for a sense of resource requirements.

I’m definitely a fan, now. The auto tagging with OpenAI is pretty nifty, too.

I’m still pleasantly surprised by hoarder.app. But I started with low expectations because I didn’t think I’d find a “bookmark manager” very handy. Lo and behold…
Hoarder
The Bookmark Everything app. Hoard links, notes, and images and they will get automatically tagged AI.

One thing to think about is power consumption. And if that’s important to you. Used server gear is cheaper upfront. But draws a lot more power—typically.

Then how simple you want to rate drive swaps to be under maintenance. If you need hotswap bays or if downtime is OK. For the chassis.

#TrueNAS if you want to fiddle is pretty good, in my experience. #Synology is easier to setup and get going. There are a few other options but I haven’t used them, myself.

Tangential note: if you’re doing video production, I suggest using whatever NAS setup you do implement as an archival step in your workflow, post exports. If you want to do edits directly, you’ll benefit greatly from >= 10 Gbps networking. Editing over 1 Gbps, even with proxies, ain’t fun.

Last pushed build I received was Jan 26, 2025. I wouldn’t say it’s updated with each server release, but it’s never lost compatibility with the server I have running.

ABS has been solid for me. Easily replaced my youtube-dl cronjobs. I do wonder if the iOS app will ever leave TestFlight though.

But it’s the eternally burning dumpster fire. Oddly reliable for these simple tasks.

If that $1200 includes the HDDs, that’s impressive deal hunting!

Sounds like a job for email.

That’s wild

What were you running in there? 😱
February 5, 2025 at 2:04 AM
I have had both TrueNAS and Synology. They do what they do and get out of the way, which is all I ask for from my storage. Budget might be your main constraint.

But don’t forget the posters in the same thread that tell you to rm random files because “it works for me” without any understanding or explanation.
