Korean school cafeteria lunches
@k-lunch.bsky.social
I’m an EPIK English teacher in a small town in South Korea. Every weekday I’ll share what the cafeteria is cooking. Tu, Thur, Fri = small town elementary school; Wed = rural middle school.
It is! Real comfort food. They used glass noodles in it which stays a nice texture in the soup

Yea, despite the tumultuous times here, it has been comforting to see the system working.

Partially. But we’ve had our own political insanity to deal with. Last week they officially impeached the president for declaring martial law needlessly. I think most people have been focused on that tbh. But it’s still affecting us, just not hearing as much about it, at least not where I am yet.

Tbh I’d love to go to a restaurant that served this. Just one set menu that’s different every day that’s just Korean school cafeteria food.

I’ve asked teachers what kids pay for these lunches. I believe it’s subsidised and they pay very little, if anything. For teachers, we pay I think about 5,600won per meal which is roughly $3.85US.

Also found out today there’s a new nutritionist at our elementary school and she’s the one trying new things. This is why the food this year has been so good! Despite the shrimp and fishcakes, the menu calls this a meat-free day, which is a first for my time here.
