Adding to this- curling ribbon is particularly bad because it can break apart into smaller pieces.

Even though it would appear they are passing it just fine, the string could still be tangled on something in their GI tract and cause harm if you pull on it. It's best to just keep an eye on them until it passes naturally. And take them to a vet if they have any symptoms (lethargy, nausea, etc.)

And for the love of god if you see a string being passed (i.e. sticking out of their butthole) DO NOT PULL IT.
