I read it just before Christmas - recommended by James, one of the booksellers in Blackwells in Oxford. What a fabulous book.

What I found odd in Waterland was that the old, rather worldly central character who retires from teaching history is only 52.

If was written in 1993 but feels like it’s from a much earlier time. Has the past of 30 years ago become a foreign country?

For some reason Hard Boiled Wonderland is one of the few Murakami books I’ve not read. I do have a copy on the shelf, though, so will get it down and add it to my ever growing “to read” pile.

I’ve just finished it. Wasn’t too sure about for the first 100 pages or so but totally loved it by the end
