The garden of the Jesuit community house at Universidad Centroamericana, El Salvador, where six Jesuits were executed by a military death squad 35 years ago yesterday.

Jesuits martyrs of UCA, pray for us.

So much about the night was moving, in particular, seeing campesinos arriving for the Mass from rural areas hours away in packed pickups with no covering on a very rainy night.

On that note, was good to see @RepMcGovern in attendance for the Mass and procession. As a congressional staffer in the 90’s, McGovern devoted years investigating the UCA killings & has been a fierce advocate for human rights in Latin Americs.

The Jesuits were just 6 of scores of clergy & religious executed during the civil war by a US-funded & trained military dictatorship. As a current UCA student told our group, “They killed these clergy because they realized they could get away with it. The US didn’t stop them.”

Yesterday marked the 35th anniversary of the martyrdom, by military death squad, of the 6 Jesuits & 2 woman at the Universidad Centroamericana in El Salvador. We pilgrimaged 16 hours from Belize w 20 students for the celebrations & it was so worth it.
