Yes this is a naff photo of a kingfisher, but importantly *I saw a kingfisher* which is very exciting.

Does anyone who knows about birds (@rsmythfreelance.bsky.social ?) know what this is? I thought it was a juvenile blackbird at first (albeit with a weirdly bald head) but the pale breast is confusing me. In a garden in Ilkley, if that helps.

I don't know why I didn't expect people to have sent New Baby cards in the 1940s, but I didn't. Here are a bunch from 1947 to continue my sharing of interesting vintage ephemera (or hoarded old scraps from my dad's attic, depending on your point of view)

And here are some cards from 1948, intended for a first birthday. Some of them are frankly terrifying. Also likely to have been bought in Drighlington or Birstall, West Yorkshire

I've been helping my dad clear out his attic. In case anyone else is as fascinated by ephemera as I am, here's a selection of 1950s birthday cards. Almost all of them are folded paper, not card - like the ones we made at school by folding A4 into quarters. Bought in/near Drighlington, West Yorkshire
