They only ever wore the curvier tail, and kept it (inside a grey field) even when they switched to dark blue uniforms in 1992.

It is subtle, but in addition to having inverted-color outlines around each part of the logo (green W gets blue, blue tail gets green on the home whites), the shape of the tail is slightly different.

The logo is often shown (on hockey cards, programs, etc.) just like the one in the first post of this thread. Sometimes in an all-white variation like they wore on their road greens.

The much-loved Whalers' logo was designed by the late Peter Good. Drawings have been circulated of his creative process, showing him coming up with the famous W+tail plus a negative-space H that we all love. His original design would have had an orange outline too.
