Unclear how effective it is (or w/ whom), but I've taken to spending time explicitly going over what I think are productive and unproductive uses of technology in terms of their own learning goals. Frame class as about the process of learning, not making good products (assignments get thrown away!)

Given their lack of empirical work, my sense is that they're mostly about myth making. Yet another step in CS's march away from being a discipline. Posting PDFs on a website with no editorial or review oversight and calling them 'papers' was bad enough. "I had some feelings." Go get a livejournal.

I think the issue is less people rearranging their sites and more people not renewing their domain names.

You see them in places like PNAS sometimes. Collection of famous full professors opine about the state and future of a research field. No original research. Not a review of existing research. Just... Self important vibes. Maybe an exhortation that everyone should be doing their favorite thing.

in my area anyway, preprinting peer reviewed stuff is about making it open access. Position papers though... I suspect it's just a lazy way to juice a CV or citation count.
