Jerks also drive away everyone else. Even without full-blown nazi's, most decent people don't want to be in a space where they are constantly having abuse screamed at them. The "marketplace of ideas" stuff just leads to whoever screams the loudest driving everyone off. Unless you moderate it...

And a lot of the bad moderation decisions just come down to moderators being overworked. Understanding the subtle social context of a comment or action is hard when you have a queue of 5 billion similar situations to deal with today.

Over the last 30 years, I've watched so many useful forums, IRC channels, games, social networks, etc, get ruined by Nazis, pedos, and general psychos.
Moderation is essential.
