The Paradox of Tolerance disappears if you look at tolerance, NOT as a moral standard, but as a social contract. If someone does not abide by the terms of the contract, they are not covered by it. In other words, the intolerant aren't deserving of your tolerance. Going Deeper: The "paradox of tolerance" disappears when a society decides to not tolerate intolerance, meaning that to protect a tolerant society, it must actively resist and counter intolerant viewpoints, even if it means limiting the expression of those views, as this is the only way to prevent intolerant groups from undermining tolerance itself; essentially, it is claiming the right to not tolerate the intolerant. Key points about the paradox of tolerance: Concept: If a society is completely tolerant, even towards intolerant groups, the intolerant groups will eventually use that tolerance to gain power and dismantle the tolerant society, effectively eliminating tolerance altogether. Philosopher: This concept is most commonly attributed to philosopher Karl Popper, who discussed it in his work "The Open Society and its Enemies". Implication: The paradox suggests that to maintain a tolerant society, there must be limits to tolerance, meaning that certain intolerant actions or ideologies might need to be actively countered to prevent them from eroding the foundation of tolerance.
