This weekend was the Annual New Fellows Orientation for the 2025 McKnight Doctoral Fellows. I was invited to serve as a panelist to discuss, “The PhD Roadmap: Graduate School Resources and Best Practices for Success.” I got to see my new students, who are both new McKnight Fellows! #AcademicSky

I’m standing between my two new students. Teresa Myrthil is on the left of the image. She’s a graduate of CMU’s chemical engineering program. Raina Johnson is on the right of the image, and she’s a graduate of the University of Miami’s environmental engineering program, and currently works at a consulting firm. We’re all smiles! Only Raina thought to take off her name tag. Dr. Adrienne Stephenson of FSU, our moderator, makes a solid (relevant) point after my comment. She is the main character of this image, wearing a read dress, hair in a bun, with perfectly snatched edges. She’s pointing with both hands for emphasis. I’m holding a microphone sitting behind the aforementioned dais (amen) smiling in agreement. The alignment! The persuasion with the pointed fingers… so great. (Clocks tea, I’m thinking, probably). The other two panelists are to my left and right, Dr. Sonja Montas-Hunter and Dr. Antoinette Smith, are pensive. This image shows the dais, and panelists with a new main character. Dr. Taylor (whose last name I can’t remember because I’m still waking up from a post-church nap) is holding a framed certificate she will soon hand to me. Her back is to the audience/camera. My face is giving, “Girl, are you going to pronounce my whole name correctly?” She was surprisingly successful! And I was impressed! But that’s not shown here. Dr. Sonja Montas-Hunter is amused by her attempted pronunciation, likely because she also had a similar gut-feeling about her names. Our other panelist is simply, not impressed and focused on placing her water bottle back down without causing chaos.

Last week I graduated my first students! I felt all of the emotions! I’m incredibly proud of both of them as you can see in these. And I’m super surprised I held it together and didn’t cry 😂 Shoutout to my hair, which was a (well) paid actress for the day!

Special thanks to his committee (all current Department Chairs 👀) who have continuously supported Jabari since we selected them. His work focused on the Air Force Office of Scientific Reseach’s Career Ready Internship Program, facilitated through the Washington DC Office of the State Superintendent.

Outreach with my tiny human last weekend. These kids from a Title 1 school in Florida toured our NSF-sponsored facility and learned about wind hazards. Then they got to build wind turbines to test them in our boundary layer wind tunnel.
Dr. Kurt Gurley, Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Florida describes how we measure wind speeds during hurricanes to a group of high school students and teachers. Everyone is outside standing near instrumented towers of various shades of orange. It’s foggy and the color of the tower stands out. Kurt has his hands raised describing how sections of the tower swing into place. Inside of the wind tunnel, Dr. Gurley shares how the wind tunnel functions and is specifically discussing what we refer to as the terraformer. This is an area between the fans a test area that can be dynamically changed to mimic topography. Over 1100 metal rectangular prisms connected to individual motors spin to reach varying heights and can be individually controlled by computer. The students stand facing the wind, which is not yet blowing. There is an instrumented plexiglass box installed and two stands for testing wind turbines visible in the image. A high school girl helps a preschool girl with their first design of a wind turbine. The young girl is my daughter and has two afro poofs, a beaded necklace and bracelet, and a rainbow cupcake pop keychain. She’s wearing a Gator engineering shirt. She is inserting a fan blade into a 3D printed hub while the older girl holds the hub still. The older girl is wearing all black and looking intently at the hub to ensure the blade is properly placed. They’re sitting on an old blue carpet. The two girls from the prior image are in the wind tunnel with their blades attached to the stand. The older girl is looking at the neighboring stand to see a digital voltage output from their design (not pictured) while the younger girl is watching their design. There is another student in background holding his fan and adjusting it.
