Giving this place another shot now that econ Twitter seems to be showing up.

I know. I doubt it, though. It's an oversimplification that makes it easy to use by racists to paint pictures they like but I think they're far more worried about just making it accessible to casual minds to sell more tests.

And, of course, also failing the marshmallow test by seeming to want to limit immigration rather than grow with the population.

They're blaming the wrong thing but kind of not far off track if Australia is NIMBY-ing like we are and so not growing what's needed to match immigration.
July 5, 2025 at 3:55 PM
I think they're talking about Australia though, which has seen a recent per-capita recession I think. And aren't they suffering from the same insane housing costs we have? That's probably ripe for an actual financial squeeze at the lower deciles.

Not really. Phrasing like “99% Sicilian” is easier to grasp than “your genome most closely aligns with reference populations centered in modern-day Sicily, based on statistical similarity.” Ain't nobody gonna try to market explaining allele frequencies to mass markets. 🤣

Yeah, I forgot they used sloppy shorthand like that in their reports. That just means most of their genetics match those on the island but that is very much going to involve a mix of backgrounds. Sicily and "racial purity" are hilarious to use in the same sentence.
July 5, 2025 at 2:33 PM
My 2nd gen immigrant stepdad would have loved being able to use 23&me on his super racist Sicilian uncle.

Interesting! I had no idea those programs existed here. I'll have to look that up.
December 6, 2024 at 5:11 AM
Don't some countries do a six year undergraduate med program? That feels like the kind of compromise we could probably be sold on here.
December 6, 2024 at 3:43 AM
Not sure I like the implication here. 😉

34 is full fledged adult and settled into a career. I'd say they have a point.
December 1, 2024 at 6:25 AM
I feel like it needed more than just articles to be written. It needed media blitzes at the same level as egg price anger had and the old story that negative emotions sell probably works against this ever happening.

I enjoy turkey also but absolutely don't force myself to deal with it years I don't have the energy. Lots of good alternatives.
November 24, 2024 at 1:18 AM
Yeah, I do think higher education is the key factor we'd have to look at to see if this is just an interesting coincidence or if there's actually something there since that's what one party is rejecting.
November 24, 2024 at 12:41 AM
I do wish there were a less nuclear block. I'd like to be able to reveal who it is or what they said when I see someone quote tweeting their stuff. 😉
November 24, 2024 at 12:16 AM
That's been my largest revelation also. I found myself checking myself on how I wanted to reply to something and came to the same realization. I think many are conflating that with a bubble but it's just kinder discussion. The discussions and disagreements are still happening, but without toxicity.

Butterfly app has the juice now that this shit is happening here! Got excited you followed me for a second then saw the follow back button and realized what was up. 🤣
November 23, 2024 at 4:40 PM
I still stand by my assessment as plausible if we're talking about a large cohort of basically college age kids.
November 23, 2024 at 4:36 PM
So the downside to how effective this site's blocks are, is I have no idea what you're complaining about here. 😉
November 23, 2024 at 11:41 AM
This reinforces my gut feeling that, despite all the praise I hear about Seattle's building, we could be doing so much more.
November 23, 2024 at 11:37 AM
He's included in some of the Econ starter packs and I think there's been a lot of unwitting follows that came from people not noticing that.
November 23, 2024 at 11:18 AM
Yeah, and they're hopped up on a lot of FAANG influencer content. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't just one extreme outlier but rather some unrealistic expectations from a subset that doesn't have good reference points yet.
November 23, 2024 at 5:36 AM
Was definitely saddened to see him included in some econ starter packs and I wouldn't be surprised if people blindly following all on those is a big part of his rapid growth. Him and Reich have made me look a lot closer at who is on those and selectively follow.
