Before I started to dye textiles with bacteria, I experimented with growing and treating leather-like bacterial cellulose, made with kombucha.

Here is a current iteration of my “Biology Rising” installation which explores Volvox, the freshwater algae that forms daughter colonies inside their mother cells and collaborate to survive. This column form glows at night. Made of #monotypes on tissue paper, dipped in beeswax. #sciart #biology

What you see in my profile picture, is blue dyed malt extract agar and a beautiful mycelium growing on it (and some small spots of yeast or bacterial contamination). I don't remember which fungi it was. Probably Trametes versicolor or Pleurotus ostreatus.

Giving the workshop "dye with a smile" today at the biolab of the Kunsthochschule (university of arts) Kassel. The students learned how to work with bacteria and how to dye textiles with pigmentbacteria.
