I’m not sure if my idea fits into the prompts provided, can I still participate? Gothic & Horror are genres with a multitude of sub-genres and tropes to explore. If you feel like your idea doesn’t fit into a category we have already provided, please feel free to post on any day and still tag us #JayvikHorrorWeek. Gothic and Horror can still be used as overall prompts for this event! Does this event have any boundaries in place to prevent horror tropes that are racially charged? The horror genre does have many harmful tropes regarding race, which we will be providing educational sources on in the months leading up to the event. Although violence is prominent in the horror genre, we ask that any fanworks you create for this event avoid violence against black women, including the characters Mel and Sky. This is not a theme the moderators are comfortable promoting during the event. Is "Dead Dove" content allowed in this event? The tag "Dead Dove: Do Not Eat" is commonly misunderstood as a label for "problematic" content. Using this tag simply acts as a warning to take the existing tags seriously, and it's often found on more intense or dark works. Since this is a horror-themed event, dark fiction is welcome here as long as it is tagged accurately. The official account will not be promoting any content involving the sexualization of underage characters (loli/shotacon), as the moderators are not comfortable engaging with it. Thank you for respecting these boundaries.

FAQ and a little history lesson 🪦
FAQ Why were these genres chosen for a fan event? Why do people make Horror and Gothic stories? They exist to scare-- to frighten and repulse and shock. Horror and Gothic were born to face the deepest fears of our society, comprehend the unknown and the darkness of humankind. They are art forms that exist and have a right to exist as a way to sit down with our fears and overcome them, to understand what frightens us and what makes us uncomfortable. In an era where horror is often seen as an evil to be defeated and art is only welcomed as a form of entertainment, we must accept that sometimes, art is meant to be uncomfortable. As Simon Pegg said, sometimes being repulsed by something is the point. Why Gothic AND Horror? Aren't they the same? While the two genres blend together nowadays, Gothic was originally born in England as a form of escapism from the Enlightenment and a return to Medieval aesthetic – the idealization of monasteries, castles and crypts, the fascinations for the supernatural and ghost stories. In the 19th century, as Gothic developed together with Victorian puritanism, horror and monstrosity bled through – Frankenstein and Dracula were born, children of that England that was terrified of the Other. The Gothic genre brewed in antithesis to the imperialist western-centric ideals of 19th century England, enlightening and discussing those fears. Gothic and Horror share many similar themes, but not all works that fall into the Gothic genre are necessarily Horror. A gothic romance may invoke a sense of dread without a horrific reveal or climax. We’ve curated prompts to reflect these ideas and inspire works that fit into either category (or both!)

GUIDELINES Jayvik Gothic & Horror Week is an opportunity to create fanworks based on a series of prompts provided by the moderating team. This includes fanfiction and fanart, but is also open to podfic, cosplay, edits, RP (roleplay), etc. We invite you to be creative and let the event inspire you! Please tag us in your posts @jvhorrorweek or use the tag #JayvikHorrorWeek. This includes any sketches, wips (works in progress), or announcements you post before the event takes place. We want to promote and uplift fan creators! More information about our ao3 collection will be available as the even approaches. CONTENT WARNING This is an 18+ event that may include triggering content typical of the gothic and/or horror genre. We encourage you to explore these themese but tag content that appears in your fanwork appropriately, whether that be on ao3 (Archive of Our Own) or social media, so that our participants can mute content they do not wish to engage with.
