I am counting down to springtime. Right now, it's so cold I have to put on layers. By the time I get a mile in, I'm carrying half of my clothes. It's a pain.

Oh my God! I just made a sugar crack...
I let my sugar toast a little too long without stirring and ended up with clumps of melted toasted sugar. I saved most of the sugar and took out the lumps, put them in my coffee grinder, and made some sort of caramel powder.
It's so good.

Strobilomyces floccopus AKA Old Man of the Woods. Edible when young, but they toughen as they get older (don't we all.)
They do have look-alikes. Be sure it has pores, not gills. When cut it "bleeds," a reddish pink that turns blackish. Tastes kinda like a portobello.

You will find this growing on wounds in hardwood and on fallen hardwood. It's super good for your brain.

Oyster mushrooms are incredibly beneficial mushrooms. They are fairly easy to identify.The gills are white, attached to the cap, and run directly down the stem. They have smooth tops that are shaped like, you guessed it, oysters. They smell fishy to me. Some people smell licorice... cool, right?
