That could cause additional stress - if she does have a problem and is uncomfortable or if it's a coping mechanism - removing it abruptly may cause a different behaviour to develop. Interrupting through play/enrichment activities may be preferable.

Check out Lucy Hoile - she's a cat behaviourist and very good. If there are no medical issues/pain (often under diagnosed in cats) it could be to do with anxiety - even a new cat moving in locally can cause upset. Hope you sort it out x www.lucyhoile.co.uk
