This app makes it easy to call your reps and senators. Give it a try, and never underestimate the power of being annoying. 😐📢😡

Godspeed.

America’s promise of freedom and opportunity is what drew our parents and grandparents to it in the first place. For some time now, it has failed to live up to that promise, and it is heartbreaking to see.

Tyrants and fascists love an emergency. So much so that they will manufacture one if it is not available.

The definitions of certain words changed a great deal during 45s administration. Lies became alternative facts. Bad press became fake news. Fascists became very fine people. Migrants became vermin.

Fascism and far-right ideology are on the rise worldwide, with no shortage of help from oligarchs like Musk.

Americas geographic isolation is both a blessing and a curse. Keep an eye on what’s going on elsewhere. As unprecedented as things may seem, this sort of thing has happened before.

Local, national, international, every little bit helps. Look into mutual aid groups as well. Minneapolis for example has an entire network dedicated to providing basic goods and services to homeless individuals.

Zuckerberg pushed the U.S. government to ban TikTok. It was a win-win for both parties since TikTok was seen by Zuckerberg as pulling business from his platforms. Meanwhile, the government got rid of an app that made it annoyingly easy for people to gather, communicate, and mobilize.

Take care of yourself.

Work out (as you are able) at the gym or at home. Go for walks. Go in for your annual visit to the doctor, dentist, optician, etc. Eat healthier as your time and budget allows. Cook more, eat out less (that one’s for me). Small, incremental changes add up quickly.

I remember walking around the day after the election. It was unnervingly quiet. Everyone seemed numb. They looked downward and kept interactions to a minimum. It was like we all had this dark, hideous secret we all knew but couldn’t talk about.

The media has been one of the President-Elect’s favorite boogeymen since 2015. Credible news sources will be essential in the years to come.

The New York Times is a great periodical both on and off Facebook. Other great news sources are NPR and MPR News, ProPublica, the BBC, and the Atlantic.

The past decade in politics has been defined by conspiracy and falsehoods.

Language and politics go hand-in-hand. Orwell knew this all too well.

Journalists and writers work hard to bring us the truth, often at great personal risk. Take time to read up on the issues of the day, and always look further into it than just a headline, a tweet, or a meme.

Every counterculture movement is inherently political, and involves standing out. The early Hippie movement in America. The Stilyagi of the Soviet Union. The Zazous in German occupied France. Even the British skinheads before being co-opted by fascists.

The President Elect and his team are already considering using local law enforcement to assist with mass deportations. Our own MPD is infamous for covering up their actions rather than addressing them.

Fitting for today.

The far right has been hoping and praying for a second civil war or revolution. The Insurrection was, in their minds, a failed attempt at this. And they will happily try it again if and when they feel they’ve amassed enough support.

I heard a story of a grandmother who lived in Germany in the 1930s. She always carried two bags with her so she would not need to do the salute when meeting someone.

Resistance does not need to be grand and dramatic actions. Sometimes it’s as simple as saying no.

Bribery of politicians (lobbying) is most prolific within the Republican Party. But Democratic politicians are just as susceptible, especially in sectors like healthcare and weapons manufacturing.

Defend the institutions that defend the people. One of the best ways to do so is to become part of those organizations, especially one that reflects your own values and interests.

We are not at the “black-vans-and secret-police” stages yet. And if we want to stay that way, be obstinate. Push back. Do not comply.

Holy shit.

Donald Trump responds to the “President Musk” memes and says “no Elon’s not going to be president. I’m safe. He wasn’t born in this country.”

It’s working. 🤣
