Both Sides of the Blade by Max McNown

Unlike his early-2025 album Night Diving, I was actually able to get through this one. But like Night Diving, I found this album a little boring. The title track is good, and then he's unable to build on it.

I can see the potential, mostly in his voice.

Longleaf Lo-Fi by Muscadine Bloodline

A surprise second album of 2025! This duo is ready to take over country music and, despite constant touring and recording, they show no signs of fatigue.

With each release, their songwriting improves. But the standout is Clairvoyant, a pop-punk ballad cover.

Mount Pleasant (EP) by Kelsea Ballerini

I love how Kelsea does EPs. Unlike most artists who just throw a few songs together, she makes the effort to have them be a self-contained story.

On this one, she sheds the joy of Patterns. It doesn't hit like Rolling Up the Welcome Mat, but it's beautiful.

All Kinds of Country (EP) by Hunter Brothers

I liked them when they first came onto the Canadian country scene about a decade ago, but this EP is awful.

The songs are poorly written and constructed, and there's a terrible cover of the Jackson 5's I Want You Back that should have never existed.

Dreams To Dream by Jake Owen

Jake Owen's transformation from beach party country to introspective neo-traditional country is complete. This is definitely his most mature and his most complete project to date.

It was a great decision for him to work with Shooter Jennings.

Last Night on Earth by Finger Eleven

My expectations were very low for Finger Eleven's first album in 10 years, and I think that helped me enjoy it more.

But still, there's nothing novel about this album. It could've been released at any point in the past 25 years.

There are four very good albums nominated for Best Contemporary Country Album at the Grammys. And then Jelly Roll...

I made pork and mushroom (frozen) dumplings with a gochujang mayo, and then I stayed on-theme and did some gochujang marinated chicken drumsticks with shrimp fried rice.

All of it was incredible.

The Weight of Our Dreaming by Riley Pearce

Another artist in the vein of Patrick Droney. I love that this album was released today, because it's just moody enough to be a great album for a cold fall evening.

I thought it ended pretty abruptly. Could've used another song or two.

King of the World by Billy Currington

Currington had two of my favourite mid-2010s country songs, but beyond that, I wasn't a fan. I really like this album though.

It sounds like he's done trying to chase the charts and instead is making music he likes, and that always makes for a better album.

Thinking Too Much by Joshua Slone

This album was recommended by Ruston Kelly on his Instagram, so I figured I'd give it a listen. It's another in a line of artists that do Zach Bryan's style better than Zach Bryan.

It's a decent debut, though it could use some editing.
