However, editors are good for catching those things. We have a distance from the story and we are reading it straight through fresh, which is something the writer never gets to do. It comes out of the writer in increments and then when they reread, it’s a story they already know.

It's okay to vary up the pattern if it will help the flow of the story. If you do well to solidify the protag at the beginning of the chapter, readers will follow along.
