Just a great week in Sigri, Lesvos, tutoring on the Fiction: A Sense of Place creative writing retreat. Sigri, on the island of Lesvos, feels like a traditional Greek fishing village that time forgot. The hosts, Cindy & Tom, are lovely. Do check it out www.sigriartsretreat.com

Had the most wonderful week tutoring the Sigri Arts Retreat Fiction: A Sense Of Place course this week. Sigri feels like a traditional Greek fishing village that has been lost in time. The hosts, Cindy & Tom are lovely, the participants were great. Do check it out www.sigriartsretreat.com

Then, later on, a Saturday in Rome centre by an empty Trevi Fountain, in an empty Piazza Navona.
Friday evening drinks with colleagues outside a bar, 2 metres apart & masked.
Always those clean, blue skies.

What a time.

Even in the depths of winter, plant bulbs for spring. And feed the birds.

My photos from then are full of tulips on our balcony, birds on the wall, plates of delicious food, and jigsaw puzzles (never again!) Album covers, clean, blue skies.
But also… my husband in hospital. My uncle who died. Screen shots of family on zoom who I hadn’t seen for months. 2/3

5 years ago school sent us all home with link to google classroom and a quick demo of google meet. And that was that for the next few months. A time of personal and national suffering and loss. And also the most beautiful spring I can remember. 1/3

It feels like I’ve been ill for forever (it’s 5 weeks).
But might have turned a corner today. In the meantime, the local park has bloomed

Writing, reading, and talking about writing and reading – it would be wonderful to see you there.
PS, the swimming is fantastic too!

We will use the unique atmosphere and scenery of Sigri fishing village on the Greek island of Lesvos both as a prompt in itself, and a launch pad to explore links between setting and character, theme, tone and genre.
