The presence of conservative values in media is meant to protect the power structures of patriarchy and religion. Norms in media have shifted since the Production Code days, but with the rise of conservatism in society, traditional images are making a comeback. (8/8) #304F25

Freedom of speech is still protected by law in the U.S. This does not mean that our rights of freely express are not under attack. It is important to exercise our freedom and avoid the self-censoring that occurs as in "The White Lotus" with Laurie's child's identity being cut from the series. (7/8)

There is a greater ability for marginalized communities to be seen when films are diverse. When LGBTQ+ youth have positive role models on screen, their existence is affirmed. Racially diverse stories and actors show that success can be defined outside the rigid ideals of mainstream society. (6/8)

A lack of diversity in film deprives minorities from the representation of that will truly reflect them. The harmful narratives about people of color can have lasting effects according to the Jim Crow Museum. Western media also centers Christianity above other religions as explained by NPR. (5/8)

When the dominant narrative is conservatism, voices that criticize those in power are dismissed and de-platformed. This can be seen in the case of Christian book author, Beth Moore, and her feud with the Southern Baptist Church and the Trump administration’s attempt to have Jimmy Kimmel fired. (4/8)

Online trends that reinforce traditional family structures and the restriction of women's place in society are old messages that have the glossy exterior of social media. The "trad wife" and "old money" aesthetics are traditional values rebranded for a new generation. (3/8)

These efforts can mean the censorship of racially diverse stories, or the glorification of traditional values. In the 20th century, religious figures in the U.S. succeeded in instituting the Production Code that limited storytelling to narratives that served the church’s goals. (2/8)

This is relevant to the film industry and young film school graduates. A film career is incredibly challenging to navigate without generational wealth or parental safety net. With the rise of AI eliminating entry level jobs, I sadly find myself regretting this major. #304F25

This is a topic that definitely sent the internet into an uproar. I see your point that sexually suggestive imagery can increase sales. I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the severity of what this ad implies about eugenics as it seems quite blatant to me.

This topic is well researched and so much fun! You make some great points about the ways that fictional men can exhibit traits that are worthy of a crush. This reminds me of my little cousin who has a crush on the boys from Kpop Demon Hunters.

I think your discussion of the issues caused by Hindu nationalism is timely given that the prime minister is pushing this narrative. The multiple religions in India have a complicated history and it is saddening that views of inclusion and tolerance are declining.

Your essay is very well done as you introduce many of us to problems that Black queer women face. Racism in the queer community is sadly more prevalent than it should be. This can be seen in media, or in real life at bars and in the dating scene.
