Allan May describes it as a cooling off period. He's not explicit about the benefit to Capone. He may have worried about other things besides an alibi, like assassination. Much harder for Aiello to get him in jail in Philadelphia.

Seems like all of it would have been possibly true. It doesn't exactly contradict the motive for getting arrested, when he later fights the charges.

I think a bunch of us gave up too easily on LiveJournal and recognize the strategy in making marginalized people feel unwelcome when they've made inroads to building community.
