A snippet from something I've been writing for fun called "The Immortals"
During the Cold War, nuclear war terrified us all — for many reasons. Not the least of which was radiation. Patience had already tested what a nuclear bomb would do to our bodies. It wouldn’t kill us, but judging by the fear in her eyes when I asked her what it felt like — I knew it wasn’t a sensation I was interested in trying. Of course, the other problem was that if everyone else was wiped out, we’d be alone. Patience estimated we’d need about 50 to 100 people to repopulate the human race. Major was okay with that. It was everything else that worried him. Patience insisted on building her own nuclear fallout shelter, stocked for a pre-selected population of 200. She never found anyone to agree to live there, but she built it anyway. I got a little worried, though, when I found out it wasn’t the only one. She said she got the idea from a video game, and those words were terrifying. Especially when what she said next was: “We could do experiments on them. Brilliant idea, really. Not sure why I didn’t think of it first.” I don’t know who let her play Fallout, but they better never let her play Portal, or we might all be in trouble.

Never Again Quinn sat on the sofa in stunned silence. The Kingstons seemed nice when they took her in. They bought her clothes, fed her. She came to think of them as family. But when her foster brother smothered his baby sister to death — placing his hand over her tiny mouth — she knew even though they knew the truth they’d let her be the one to take the blame. It was easier that way. She was the foster daughter; he was the biological son. She knew she shouldn’t have learned to love, to care the way she did. Now, she never would again.
