Yes, it's a whole thing. I blew up Matt's phone when he asked me about it so I'll try not to do it to you. But the real story is that there's a larger power struggle over the future of chess and the ban and the withdrawal was a move and countermove. Very high drama in the world of chess.

It certainly inspired the Great Divorce; as you probably know, MacDonald is Lewis' guide in that book. The book as a whole is enigmatic and brilliant and I'm not sure I understand it all. But there are particular images in it that have deeply shaped my imagination.
