Bishop Budde struck a nerve! I love his attempt to take away the years of learning and toil that culminated in achieving a Bishopric, and on the unironically-named Truth Social, at that. And at that, at the Washington National Cathedral — literally centered in the heart of American politics. (1/2)

And I love Diana Cumming’s electric portrait of Pears that is referenced.

Nice example of the impact of ephemera: things that are designed to be disposable background material like chopstick sleeves build up to tell a story if accumulated in numbers.
“The latest addition to the Archive’s holdings of Asian ephemera is the hashibukuro collection of Susumu Kitagawa… Personal collections of ephemera such as this make @letterformarchive.org a singular resource: rare books + type specimens live in the stacks alongside punk flyers + chopstick sleeves.”

Heartened to see this. I’ve loved exploring the world of climbing boys in Britten’s children’s opera “The Little Sweep” as part of a new book I’m editing with Joy Calico: “Childhood & the Operatic Imaginary since 1900” for @cambridgeup.bsky.social More updates to come about our amazing contributors.

This is the real church.
Can you imagine the courage it took to preach this message directly to the president? This is what a follower of Jesus looks like. (Partial transcript below.)

This.
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

And as bell hooks asserted: “If we want a beloved community, we must stand for justice, have recognition for difference without attaching difference to privilege.”

I’m grateful to have been commissioned to write a programme essay about Thea Musgrave’s ‘Mary, Queen of Scots’ for the 2025 English National Opera prod. (And for the @royalphilsoc.bsky.social!) Thea is an international treasure—and is claimed by the US, as well.

Such a Grande Dame.
"When you walk into Notre-Dame de Paris, the air feels alive with echoes of the past. This iconic cathedral was more than a masterpiece of Gothic architecture—it was a giant musical instrument designed to bring medieval melodies to life." www.medievalists.net/2024/12/why-...

More than five years ago, Parisians and the world watched in horror as a devastating fire tore through the centuries-old Notre Dame cathedral.

As the cathedral reopens, here’s a look at what survived, what was restored and what’s new.

As always, the Mikey & I loved ambling through a local antique store with Mom. We enjoy that each year they decorate their trees with a collection of vintage ornaments. ❄️🎄

We loved attending the last organ concert in Notre-Dame just hours before the fire…… and we cannot wait to return to this majestic cathedral and see it in all its splendor.
