There’s a mention in today’s budget about exploring participation in Eurovision and I feel seen
Good news, to fans of the perpetually campy Eurovision Song Contest. Today's budget includes $150 million in new funding for CBC/Radio-Canada to modernize and expand its operations, and reveals that Ottawa "is working with CBC/Radio Canada to explore participation in Eurovision." Despite its name, the songwriting competition is open to any member of the European Broadcasting Union - which includes Australia, Turkey, Israel, and Canada. While we've never participated in the show, where each country fields a single song to go head-to-head against the other nations of Europe and elsewhere, we've had some representation. In 1988, a young Celine Dion won the contest for Switzerland with "Ne partez pas sans moi." (A bop.)

A United Nations commission of inquiry says Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. A new report says there are reasonable grounds to conclude that four of the five genocidal acts defined under international law have been carried out since the start of the war with Hamas in 2023: killing members of a group, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to destroy the group, and preventing births. It cites statements by Israeli leaders, and the pattern of conduct by Israeli forces, as evidence of genocidal intent.
