I am very sold.

I got to this major city in act 2 that is actually giving me major Morrowind vibes with the layout and size.

I like finishing games before commenting, but this game gets a thumbs up from me.

I played some of the first game, which I liked plenty, but the jank was real. I never finished it because of some bug.

2 manages to keep the same feeling as 1, but also makes it feel way better to play. Recommended!

Bring your set up and brew your own!

Yeah, I have felt far less motivated to sit at my PC these past few years. I'll still do it when it makes more sense, but kicking back on the couch is way nicer and the dock is just great

My PC is 9 years old; it's still holding up great, but I'll need to start thinking about next steps soon

It's still weird for me to see how much JRPG discourse has shifted over the years. P5 still feels new, but I guess that comes with getting older lol

Overall, I'd say that the game is worth checking out whether if you've played an old version before. It's hard for me to say how much of my enjoyment is driven by nostalgia, but I'm still glad I checked it out.

I'm in January right now, so not quite done with the game yet. I do hear that the final boss is way easier, so I'm curious about that.

The pacing could be better; my longest break was because of a quiet period around August-October, but that's from the original.

There are enough QoL improvements that help move things along, so I definitely appreciated that. One big disappointment was that there wasn't a sort of compendium fusion feature; I'm not sure why they didn't add that.

No more Marin Karin spam, though; I will not be a victim ever again

They also made small changes to characterization that overall feel better. Not the antagonists, though; they're the same bunch of losers as ever.

On the gameplay side, exploring Tartatus feels way better. The game definitely feels way easier, but also much less of a slog.

I was happy to see that, while it still retains its identity, they added just enough to make the game feel way better.

On the writing side, they gave everyone more lines at the dorm to fill out things just a bit more that does a LOT to flesh out the cast.

I enjoyed Chained Echoes plenty and thought that Sea of Stars was a joke, but neither of those were good homages to old JRPGs at all. I'd be tempted to call Quartet one of the best at doing this that I've seen.

In short, I would absolutely recommend this one. It didn't stick the landing anywhere as well as Noctuary, but had a very strong start that continues well into the game. The line-by-line writing was very nice and they succeeded at making it into both a callback and also its own thing.

The gameplay was pretty straightforward turn-based, but felt nice. Some characters feel more useful than others, but that's nothing new. I do think that things dragged on a bit near the end gameplay-wise with the number of battles, but never had a challenge progressing.

Also, they weren't as well-integrated into the main plot as they could've been especially given the fantastic prologues. You also get freedom to explore the world, which was nice, but I still got the feeling that they were hoping to include more at that point.

The third act, which contained all of the character quests plus the final boss (think chrono trigger), is when things fell apart a bit.

I got the distinct impression that a few things were left at the cutting room floor since some character quests felt more well-realized than others.

The main plot does not shy away from certain historical allegories in only a way that indie games can do. That aside, the writing continued to hold up: compact, snappy, but still well-defined. It wasn't afraid to joke around a bit, but also get very serious.

In a way, these introductions were the best part of the game. The storytelling felt distinctly retro, but also communicates far more than what actual retro games ever did.

In act two, the characters all join together for what you could call the main plot.
October 12, 2025 at 10:45 PM
The prologue introduces one pair of characters out of eight per chapter, and the way it does that is to present a different view of magic in the game's world in each chapter. Each chapter feels quite distinct from the others, and the characters felt very well-defined from the start.

The way I'd describe it is that it's a textbook example of a homage to SNES JRPGs. I feel like the term "homage" gets overused, but Quartet has a very particular voice and just nails it.

The plotting actually did remind me of Falcom games, but with vastly less fluff. You even have subevents for every named character.

The main caveat I'd mention is that apparently the English TL may be weak. The original was in Chinese, but I played it in Japanese which seemed to be pretty good.
