.. more people have died in 2022 than in 2020 (the bad year), just their deaths aren't being counted as COVID.

100%. I would say a *single* infection gives you (Long) Covid, as the harms are well documented. For most we're just a few years in from their first infection.
And we already have people dying of (Long) Covid at year 5, who survived the initial culling.
