Tenants in seniors' residences say ballooning fees are forcing them out There are growing calls for the province to regulate service fees the same way it does rent to stop 'price gouging.' Aug. 24, 2025 John Simmons, 96, who lives at The Court at Brooklin near Whitby, Ont., said his pensions no longer cover the soaring living expenses billed by the home. When John Simmons moved to a Whitby seniors' community in 2021, he and his wife paid $2,739 a month for a large one-bedroom apartment along with hospitality services - three meals a day, housekeeping and bus transporta-tion. By early 2025, Simmons, now a 96-year-old wid-ower, was paying $4,362 a month for the same unit and services, a nearly 60-per-cent jump. Provincial guidelines have limited rent increases to 2.5 per cent per year for most tenants since 2023. It will be even lower, 2.1 per cent, in 2026. But in care homes and retirement homes, the cost increases of meals and care services such as assistance with bathing are not regulated. Landlords need only to respect a 90-day notice for an increase; the amount is left to market forces. In a recent Landlord and Tenant Board decision, the adjudicator noted that charges for care services can even be increased more than once in a 12-month period, as long as the tenant is given proper notice. Simmons himself reached out to Premier Doug Ford directly in late 2022 after his fees were raised for the second time at a rate he found unconscionable. "This increase of 16.6% must be considered as price-gouging!!" he wrote, pleading for the premier to "find a way to initiate some form of legislation" to curb the practice. Raymond Cho, the minister for seniors and accessibility, wrote Simmons back, thanked him for his perspective, explained that homes such as his can raise fees with proper notice and guided him to a website with information relevant to seniors in Ontario. IKEA announced on Tuesday it's cutting its restaurant prices in half for adults and kids eat free from Monday to Friday. The move is meant "to help people stretch their budgets, nourish their families, and find a little more joy," the retailer said. "Securing the lowest possible price for our products is always our utmost goal, and this is even more important in today's times of economic uncertainties and cost-of-living pressures," Tolga Öncü, Ingka retail manager at IKEA Retail, said in a news release. The company says a family of four in France will now pay 6.96 Euros ($11.12 CAD) for a meal and a 5 Euro store voucher, compared to the previous price of 19.9 Euros ($31.63 CAD). Food inflation has been a persistent issue in Canada, having climbed a whopping 31 per cent since 2019, according to NerdWallet Canada. Prices for food purchased in stores climbed 2.8 per cent year-over-year in June, according to Statistics Canada, outpacing overall inflation for the month.

Several Conservative MPs are criticizing the Crown's approach to prosecuting two key organizers of the "Freedom Convoy" protests, with the party's deputy leader calling it an act of "political vengeance." Tamara Lich and Chris Barber were convicted of mischief in April for their roles in organizing the demonstration, which blockaded streets around Parliament Hill for more than three weeks in early 2022. Lich has posted on social media that the Crown is seeking a sentence of seven years for her and eight years for Barber. Canada continues to provide support to the United States as they battle the devastating wildfires in southern California. On January 13, the province of Alberta sent a trained and experienced crew of 40 Type 1 wildland firefighters and two support staff. Additional Type 1 firefighters, Incident Command personnel, and qualified support staff will be ready to go if requested. Alberta is also preparing water bombers and contracted night vision helicopters to be ready if needed. This past Saturday, the province of British Columbia sent a team of senior technical staff to fill specialized incident command system functions. This is part of a long-standing bilateral relationship with CAL Fire and based on their request for support. B.C. is also sending a crew of Type 1 firefighters, through a U.S. National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) and Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) request for support. In addition to the two CL-415 water bombers sent in August 2024 to Los Angeles, the province of Québec is deploying two other CL-415 water bombers to support firefighting efforts in California. Québec also has 60 Type 1 wildland firefighters available and on standby for deployment.

Police - whether forces or associations - need to be held to an impartial standard.
