Also due to the rain, the (very noisy and easy to observe from home) gila woodpeckers have now taken the top spot from mourning doves for the month of September. Very exciting development

Somewhat of a skill check today as much of my attention lately has been devoted to late season pollinators (which are really popping off right now btw), so I've been practicing multitasking bug photography while birding by ear. I'm getting better at it! 🪶

Today also holds the distinction of being the only day where I can reasonably say that quails were my most observed bird. Usually that honor goes to the sparrows or finches or pigeons or doves. So many quails today🪶

Mockingbirds have been the story of the month so far; from June to mid-July i would see them daily, but then they dropped off a lot and August & September I only saw them an average of 5 days per month. October mockingbird sightings are 3/3, a promising looking comeback arc so far🪶

I saw a hawk today that I think might have been a juvenile Harris's hawk which would be new for me but despite observing it with binos for a while I feel completely unconfident about my ability to ID it. So, not counting it for today, hopefully get another chance soon 🪶

Despite seeing 110 species and an average of 18 species per day, most species I don't encounter very regularly 🪶 it is interesting though seeing what species are trending up or down

With 37+ total species, that makes today my highest single day bird count (previous best was 35). Plus four new birds! to bring my total count to 110 and the September count to 86 (which breaks my August record of 85) 🪶
potential storms tomorrow, so nice activity before that break
