It looks like the Volunteer Fire Brigade units were in attendance for over 11 hours overnight, controlling & monitoring.
With all that fuel source I would imagine the blaze will be deep seated & cause potential problems for aa few days to come, especially if the wind picks up again.

Like many others Orion was one of the first two constellations I recognised as a kid growing up in the UK (the 2nd being the 'Saucepan-with-bent-handle'/Big Dipper/Plough). After 35 years of living in NZ it still seems strange to see Orion is upside-down here!

Supposedly a controlled burn - on a windy day - on the bottom edge of a hillside full of slash (tree branches etc).

Sounds like the controlled element stopped when the contractor went home at the end of his day!

Despite living in NZ now for nearly 35 years I still can't get used to Orion being upside down.

Finally we get the Spooky Spectacular.... eerie.

I went from Type 21 (Alacrity) to Batch 2 Type 22 (Boxer) then Batch 1 Type 22 (Broadsword) - then two Leanders (with the RNZN) Southland (Ex Dido) & Canterbury.
Alacrity was the best!

When I first read this I had visions of squirrels lining up to get inoculated in return for a free nut... (would they need a booster jab after 6 months?)
Not seen a Red Squirrel in S.E.Kent since the late '60s, only greys. Save them please.
No squirrels here in NZ (only stuffed toys). I miss them

I was trying to work out what was wrong with this picture - I think it was that you could actually SEE the plane - no fog, no heavy rain, no Carlos photobombing the picture, no twig!!!

Thanks for outlining the reasons - I was wondering why. Did see some shocking video of an idiot who had climbed a splatter cone during the Sept eruption to view the lava fountain. You could see cracks all around him, and a cone collapse looked imminent.
