Kafkaesque refers not just to the surreal or absurd but to the unique reading experience Kafka’s texts evoke: the reader is drawn to interpret yet frustrated, as they resist clear meaning. Gaps appear that are hard to fill, familiar thought patterns fail, disrupting normal understanding.

Situations described as Kafkaesque are those that appear nightmarish, absurd, incomprehensible, bureaucratically oppressive, or meaningless. Often, an overpowering and inscrutable structure takes center stage, one that disempowers the individual and evokes feelings of helplessness.
