Researching the intricacies of international biodiversity governance @Iddri - constantly swinging between "world's doomed" and "I'm optimistic because everyday I get a little more desperate, and desperate situations yield the quickest results" 🪲

If you're at COP16, let’s connect, over coffee, aperitivo, or just bumping into each other in negotiation rooms 👋

So, what's next? These decisions should be adopted in Rome. Will they? That’s the plot twist we're all waiting for. But in a world of uncertainty, let's at least secure a way forward at the Convention on biological diversity #CBD.

A weak review = weak accountability = weak action. Our blog post from last month with PBL (w/ Marcel Kok) explains why this is the moment to set up a robust global review to enhance efforts in the coming years: www.iddri.org/en/publicati...

Global Review 🔍 if we want the #GBF to actually deliver, we need a review process that's strong, open & forward-looking, all the way to #COP17 in Armenia. Because, spoiler: if we don't track progress, progress likely won't happen.

Without that, we risk another two years (!) of vague commitments & wishful thinking. Our @odi.global - @iddri.bsky.social (w/@Laetitia Pettinotti) blog post dives into what's at stake: odi.org/en/insights/...

@iddri.bsky.social and PBL are committed to supporting this process and mobilizing stakeholders to ensure the Global Review delivers real impact.

This can’t just be a "review for review's sake" or a bureaucratic exercise. It must avoid the "accountability trap": focusing only on gaps without fostering real change. Instead, it should highlight successes to inspire action, strengthen international cooperation, provide tools and recommendations

With PBL, we believe the Global Review can and must be reinforced, and: (1) ensure transparency and inclusiveness, involving diverse stakeholders (2) be based on many robust references (and not only national reports) and (3) inform further action, not only be a static report
January 17, 2025 at 4:16 PM
The modalities of the Global Biodiversity Review should be adopted at COP16 (bis) in Rome, and it should kick off a 2-year process leading to COP17 in Armenia. This mechanism must track progress, identify gaps, and build momentum for stronger action.
