Good to see journalists critically pursue the approach of German Economics Minister, who is twisting facts to slow down the clean energy transition.

"Reiche's focus on gas plants seems out of date. New gas plants would have to be massively subsidized."

Compare the approach of the Spanish prime minister following Palestine protests a la Vuelta a España, to the UK crackdown..

"We have immense respect & profound admiration for a Spanish civil society that mobilizes against injustice & peacefully defends ideas"

@beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social research with @ember-energy.org & @e3g.bsky.social found the UK has the longest queue of renewables projects waiting to connect in Europe.

Unlocking this gridlock will be key for achieving the 2030 clean power mission.

Great news from the UK - with more than 16GW of new renewable capacity (323 projects) given permission to start building during the second quarter of this year.

The figure for capacity represents a 195% rise on the same quarter last year ⬆️ www.ft.com/content/926a...

New @ieefainstitute.bsky.social analysis warns Greece may be pursuing a dash for gas power to boost its energy export capacity 🤑

As @thegreentank.bsky.social has warned, consumers will face higher bills if a capacity mechanism is introduced to underpin this expansion.

We need to get off the fossil fuel energy price rollercoaster. The only way to do this is to kick gas out of the market, and scale up renewables and complementary technologies, like power grids and energy storage.

Italian gas giants Enel & A2A have together received around €4 billion in contracts – contributing to a dash for gas that sees Italy planning to add 10.75 GW of new gas plants across the country. beyondfossilfuels.org/wp-content/u...

NEW @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social analysis📣

In January, we revealed that European 'capacity market' subsidies have contracted €50BN+ to fossil plants, paid via energy bills. Today, we lift the lid on who's received the biggest share of gas plants contracts 👀 beyondfossilfuels.org/2025/06/26/f...

Nice write-up in @eldiario.es on how the Spanish government's report on the blackout hides, at the request of the power companies, which facilities failed.

The report underscores that gas ≠ energy security: including plants which are paid to provide this service.

Looking forward to seeing this being revealed next month...

The Spanish government is reporting that the cause of the massive blackout wasn't a lack of thermal power plants - rather that they failed to provide power at the time, acting 'inappropriately'.

Funny, after fossil lobbyists were so quick to blame renewables..

New modelling by Aurora finds that the the German capacity gap is <5GW the vast majority of time in 2035.

This suggests the German gov's push for 20GW of new gas plants would be a gigantic waste of money: storage & demand-side flex are a much better investment. www.linkedin.com/posts/nicola...
June 11, 2025 at 1:34 PM
Wow - research for @bund.net finds that the German gov's push for 20GW of gas plants could cost up to €32.4bn 🤯

If paid for via a levy on energy bills, this would act as a double-blow for bill payers – who would also be locked into volatile gas prices for decades to come 💸

In our new report, @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social, @e3g.bsky.social, @ember-energy.org & IEEFA make the case for independent system planning and operation; to ensure investments in the grid are aligned with a rapid & efficient clean energy transition.

Great deep-dive from @carbonbrief.org on what's driving high electricity prices in the UK. Spoiler: it's continued reliance on burning fossil gas!

All focus should be on accelerating renewables, grids & clean flex -- & reducing the market power of gas.

More robust governance is necessary to ensure TSOs are delivering. Grid investments will be central to Europe’s future security & competitiveness. Yet levels of oversight & transparency is generally low. We encourage countries to follow the lead of the UK's independent NESO model.

The good news is that the prize is within reach, with pockets of good practice showing feasibility. What's needed is political leadership.

Through the report, we highlight best practice case studies to inspire action - like this great one in Denmark.

Unsurprisingly, we find that grids remain a major bottleneck to clean economic growth.

A conservative estimate suggests as of 2024-25, there were 1,700 GW of RES projects waiting for grid connections across 16 countries, represent billions of euros worth of investment being held back.

Love to see this clear messaging from the Spanish Prime Minister #apagon

“Be wary of those who tell you this is about renewables, because that's not the case. There's no evidence that the incident was caused by an excess of renewables or a lack of nuclear energy”
