2/ Dryland conditions during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition shaped hominin landuse and resource provisioning. Abandoned channels and ponds near a major confluence between two rivers became focal points for resource provisioning, toolmaking, and butchery.

Wow that's a pretty drastic change, definitely avoid vinegar then.

To add, over-the-counter vinegar can work. We used this in Zimbabwe and it worked wonders. If you have access to a sonicator, this can also help dislodge the crusts while submersed in acid or vinegar
