Opening day scene at Park City Mountain. 2 seniors from Wasatch High arrived at 2 p.m. *Thursday* to snag first chair on the Red Pine Gondola. Three Park City High students arrived at 5 and will get first chair, too.

Utah ski areas have roughly a thousand trails and 173 lifts, with very few repeat names among them.
Here’s a look at the sometimes meticulous, sometimes scattershot way those names are chosen.

Ski run names like Humbug might seem off-the-cuff, but Utah's resorts put months of time, web searches and reviews into picking the names of their runs and lifts.
