It’s December. Time to break out my favorite holiday shirt. May have to wear it every day for the next 4.5 years.

🎶 “…reading the news and it sure looks bad. They won’t give peace a chance, that was just a dream some of us had.” 🎶

Hard to believe I was at the Hollywood Bowl listening to my boyfriend Marcus Mumford sing these words to Joni just over a month ago. Now feels like it was the calm before the storm.

Toonces would like you to know she does not approve of the cold temps this morning. Brrrr! #winteriscoming

Every time I get together with writerly friends, we end up playing some version of “You liked this? Have you read that?” Here’s a quick collage of our recs from dinner last night. Now you go…what would you recommend?

I haven't had a lot of words to say this past week. But I deactivated my Twitter account. I re-upped my ACLU donations. I made an effort to reach out to friends outside of social media. And I saw this on my walk yesterday. That's all I've got right now, friends. Be well.

Finding a critique partner is at the top of my list of things I wish every writer would do BEFORE reaching out to an agent, editor, or book coach for help with their story.

So this month, I'm running my free CP matching service, CP Meet Cute: pages.julieartz.com/cp-meet-cute

My pal is headed into a tricky foot surgery this morning, but she has this little gem in her bag to keep her company as she recovers. #amreadingromance

Just finished Yellowface in one frantic binge. Such an excellent critique of publishing, with both nuance and thriller-like pacing, especially at the end. I don’t usually go in for unlikable protagonists, but this one was chillingly plausible.

I stole my kiddo’s fox ears to wear to our monthly writer gathering (yes, in public) and have been informed that I am causing said kiddo “second hand embarrassment.” Well, at least I’m not cringe 🤣

I know you’re trying to work, but you cruelly deserted me for the weekend, so I demand pets, no matter how inconvenient.

Sunday I taught my "Five Beat Outline" #NaNoWriMo prep course at the local library and a 13yo writer showed up. She asked great questions throughout and stayed after for the write-in. I sent her home with a book (OF COURSE) and she was thrilled. I hope I'll see her books on the shelf someday 💜

Fruit gardening is a lot like writing, actually. This is the first lemon I harvested from a tree I got (therapy fruit? emotional support tree?) during the pandemic. I killed two previous lemon trees (one by leaving it outside for the winter, one by leaving it in), but finally succeeded 3yrs later.

There is definitely not a trap door to the underworld in the garage of our rental house for retreat. But I parked on it to hold the demons in just in case.
